This episode of Strangers tells the story of Becca, who was a virgin in her thirties.
While my parents are a lot more accepting than hers seem to be, I could relate to a lot of her life, from the strict religious upbringing, the feeling of living a double life and the obsession with virginity.
It’s a good story. Strangers, as well as the other podcasts from Radiotopia are well worth a listen.
A word of caution: some of the anecdotes may be overly descriptive for some people.
Very interesting! You find such interesting podcasts!
Interestingly, I am Jewish (not Orthodox – thank God!) and I was so close applying to become a beauty therapist (which would have involved shaving/waxing different parts of someone elses body).
I very much disagree with generations not moving with time. Yes, some parts to our culture is timeless tradition, but living our present lives as our predecessors? That’s wrong. We just need to listen to Bob Dylan’s Time’s a-changing.
And one thing that I feel strong about (and experienced) is one should never ask you to convert; in the same way that you should never ask anyone to covert either.

I had no idea you were almost a beauty therapist! Expecting someone to change their beliefs for you doesn’t sound fair, or possible for that matter.
